LONDON — It was an early Christmas tradition that would be repeated for decades.
A young Floyd and his bandmates, including guitarist Nick Mason, were driving home from a gig in Wales and spotted a lone tree in the distance.
The singer’s voice echoed out: “Oh, the Piper at Gates of Darkness.”
It was the first time that Pink Floyd had ever recorded a song in the UK.
It became the first song ever written for a Floyd album, Pink Floyd: The Wall, and would later become the foundation of the band’s worldwide success.
Now, for the first in a series of songs that will celebrate life, it’s being performed in the same way.
For decades, the song was used as a Christmas tune in the U.K. to sing along to songs like “Christmas in June,” “My Baby’s a Merry Little Man,” and “You Won’t Find Another Christmas Song” — all of which are now classics.
In 2010, Floyd’s frontman Roger Waters announced that they would be making a video tribute to the song, called “The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn.”
The video was released in 2017.
The Pink Floyd tribute, which will air in 2019, is being performed by the band at a concert at the London Palladium on Christmas Eve.
It’s a beautiful, beautiful video, which you can watch for yourself here.
Pink Floyd will perform The Piper at The Gates of Dusk, a song written by the group, on Dec. 30, 2019.
The video will be the first ever to be performed in concert in the United Kingdom, according to a press release.
The band also released the lyrics to “The Wall” as a song for fans to listen to on their mobile devices.
The song was written by Nick Mason and was the inspiration for the Pink Floyd video, as well as the video for “The Day” from “The Man Who Sold The World.”
In a statement, Roger Waters said, “It is great to see so many people enjoying this incredible song.
Pink’s wonderful work is being used as an inspiration to inspire others to live a life of meaningful love and purpose, and for us to explore our own unique, yet familiar, side.”
For the first decade of its existence, the Pink Floyds’ music was largely a solo endeavor.
In 1997, the group released their debut album, The Wall and released their first full-length album, A Saucerful of Secrets.
They continued to write and record together until 2002, when Roger Waters and co-founder David Gilmour formed Pink Floyd.
The group has been working on new music ever since, including the 2017 follow-up, A Momentary Lapse Of Reason.
Roger Waters has been vocal about the need to create more music for people to enjoy, saying in 2017 that “Music can be the beginning of a better life.”
The Wall is available for streaming on Spotify and Apple Music.
